Eri silk is a special form of silk only found in Brahmaputra valley of Assam. Obtaining yarn from the Eri cocoon is very expensive, time consuming and laborious methods consisting of three steps, viz., degumming, boiling, drying etc. The artisans started migrating to other trades because of less earning and time consuming traditional methods. RuTAG IIT Guwahati developed an Eri Cocoon opener. It is an electrically operated machine powered by a 0.5Hp motor. Three initial steps has been combined into a single steps in this machine. 1000 gm of Eri yarn can be produced per day.Productivity increased upto 7 times.
